I rag on Netflix a lot, mostly because they are absolutely awful at taking care of customers as was clearly established last year during their Qwikster debacle but every now and then they do something that makes their price worth it, at least for that month.

They have two movies on there that I want to highly recommend.

The first is Winter's Bone, a dram featuring Jennifer Lawrence of Hunger Games and X-Men: First Class fame. The movie is dark, both in filming and in outlook but extremely good. The blurb provided by Netflix is as follows:

In director Debra Granik's unflinching noir drama set deep in the Ozarks, resilient teen Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) goes on the trail of her missing, drug-dealing father when his absence jeopardizes the family's safety. Her deadbeat dad has a key court date pending, and Ree is determined that he show up — despite the objections of the insular Dolly clan. The film earned Oscar and Independent Spirit Award nods for Best Picture and for Lawrence.

Watch it, watch it, watch it!!!

If you don't have Netflix, subscribe or buy this one on DVD. Winter's Bone should have resulted in an Oscar win, not just a nomination!

The second movie that I really enjoyed was a documentary by actor and New Orleans resident, Harry Shearer (Spinal Tap, The Simpsons, etc.) and is called The Big Uneasy. It deals with the cause and effect of the flooding in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. The documentary is well made and engrossing and the opinions of the experts involved clearly show this wasn't a natural disaster but rather a series of mistakes and transgressions by a number of different people.

With hurricane season heating up, The Big Uneasy deserves a look.
