Jessica Chastain (‘The Help’) reigned at the top of the box office this weekend. She has two films that made the number one and two spots, both very different from each other.
At an unexpected number one was ‘Mama’, with $28.1 million, a horror movie about a couple, Annabel (Chastain) and Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) who have the challenge of raising his two young nieces who were left in the forest for 5 years and when discovered were in an animal-like state.

Jessica Chastain recently won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ and is also nominated for an Academy Award. Currently, she is taking part in the revival of ‘The Heiress’, on Broadway, opposite Dan Stevens (‘Downton Abbey’).
Chastain’s film about the chase for Osama bin Laden ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ got second place with $17.6 million. Despite all the controversy surrounding the movie, it has stood its ground. In third place with $11.4 million came ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.
This weekend also marked the post-gubernatorial debut of Arnold Schwarzenegger, with his action film ‘The Last Stand’ which took in a dismal $6.3 million and finished at number ten.
Rounding up the top five were ‘Gangster Squad’ in fourth place with $9.1 million, starring Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn and Emma Stone and ‘Broken City’ with Russell Crowe in fifth place with $9 million.
The rest of the top ten movie earners this weekend are: ‘A Haunted House’ at number 6, with $8.3 million; ‘Django Unchained’ at number 7 with $8.2 million; ‘Les Misérables’ in eight place with $7.8 million; ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ at ninth place with $6.4 million.
