Best Strong Female Leads: 5 Actresses Powering through Upcoming Films

Hollywood is filled to the brim with action heroes and supermodels pretending at the art of acting, flaunting their perfect bodies and glorious smiles at the camera, vacillating rapidly from near-tears to enraged in order to get on the Oscar watch, but how can they compare with true talent? We, the cinephiles, the true watchers for Oscars, know the difference between pretense and talents.

In honor of true talent, here are five actresses to see in upcoming films and to follow as they barrel through difficult and award-worthy roles.

Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”

After seeing the first Hunger Games movie, I was hooked- and because I hadn’t read the series, I knew that there was something special about the film itself. And then I saw “Silver Linings Playbook”, and I knew that Jennifer Lawrence, hailing from my home state of Kentucky, was the spark. Fresh from her Oscar win, Lawrence may not have the most Oscar potential in this flick for the masses, but she will certainly set a fire under our pants for more of her dry snark and wit.

Julianne Moore in “Carrie”& “Don Jon”

These are certainly not the most likely films to make us love Julianne, but she is already such a long-standing favorite, with such films as “The Kids are All Right”, that she will surely be fun to watch. And the role of Carrie’s mother in this remake could be worth a look- remember the chilling scene with the kitchen cutlery?

Cate Blanchette in “Blue Jasmine”

Directed by Woody Allen, this flick may not be as hot as it could be, for he has seemingly lost touch with the best elements of his rapid-fire style. But it is possible that Cate, one of my personal favorites from films like the Elizabeth couplet, could bring some much needed passion to the silver screen. I’ll always remember her with white face and a frilly collar.

Nicole_Kidman_2,_2013

Nicole Kidman in “Grace of Monaco”

This list begins to heat up with a turn for the Oscar watch as Nicole Kidman glides as Princess Grace. This biopic is touted as much more than that, more like a character study of the famed actress, with Nicole taking over her shoes perfectly. I am inclined to believe she will pull it off in the style of “The Hours”. Refusal to view that film is a crime in my book.

Meryl Streep in “August: Osage County” & “Into the Woods”

Last, and the opposite of least, is the leading lady of today’s cinema, Meryl. She’s got two films coming up that I highly anticipate for the Oscar watch. First, and so soon, is “August: Osage County”, the adaptation of the phenomenal Tracy Letts play in which Meryl portrays the volatile Violet, a role responsible for the hilarity and abrasive nature of the stage production. On the opposite end of the spectrum comes “Into the Woods”, a 2014 picture wherein Meryl is the Witch, the quasi-narrator of the Sondheim musical for children with a very adult message. Meryl’s musical career may not be the most stellar (though I thoroughly admit enjoying Mamma Mia), but after her Oscar win and a long career of fantastic performances, she is impossible to ignore, no matter what screen she appears on.
