Following India Knight’s rave review in Sunday’s ‘Style’ supplement, we’ve been inundated with inquiries from those who’re a bit bewildered as to which shade of Matte or Luminizing Moisture Tint to opt for.
Below is a little bit of tailored advice from me (a Jouer devotee) that should hopefully make the decision-making process less confuzzling.
With regard to the Jouer Cosmetics Moisture Tints – whether you opt for Matte or Luminzing really depends on your skin type and the effect you prefer.
A matte complexion is very ‘on trend’ (according to the weird and wonderful world of fashion) so Matte Moisture Tint has proven exceptionally popular of late. That said, as it’s summer, many find they prefer a little less coverage and something that’s going to even out their skin tone, whilst allowing any freckles or post-holiday glow to show through – which is where the Luminizing Moisture Tint really comes into its’ own…
I’m fair skinned (quite pink) with blue eyes and hair that’s a weird mix of brown, blonde and ginger – a mash up of Celtic/North East England ancestry that means I tan relatively easily (thanks Dad) but am generally pretty pasty-faced (thanks Mum)…

During late spring and early summer I wear Luminizing Moisture Tint in Pearl or Blush (or a mixture of the two) – graduating to Golden once I’ve seen some sun and have a bit of colour (praise be)! Luminizing Moisture Tint is perfect during summer as the formula feels barely there, doesn’t slip or slide, has SPF 20 and free-radical fighting antioxidant ingredients plus a sheer, skin-enhancing finish that’s virtually undetectable, even when subjected to the unforgiving glare of direct sunlight.
Because the consistency is so translucent, it’s quite difficult to go far wrong in terms of shade. Most people find they can get away with the one either side of their usual, due to the ease with which this blends and its barely-there effect. But for newbies, here’s a nifty guide to getting it right:
Opal – porcelain to fair complexions (think Michelle Williams, Julianne Moore)
Pearl – fair complexions (Emma Watson, Jennifer Lawrence, Joely Richardson)
Blush – fair complexions with pink undertones (Scarlett Johanson, Anne Hathaway, Kate Winslet)
Golden – light to medium complexions (Jessica Biel, Gwyneth Paltrow)
Glow – medium complexions (Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Aniston)
Bronzed – medium to tan complexions (Jennifer Lopez, Rosario Dawson, Eva Mendes)
Deep Bronzed – tan to dark complexions (Beyonce, Thandie Newton)

The Matte Moisture Tint provides slightly more coverage than its illuminating counter-part, and is perfect if your skin is slightly combination/oily or just prone to a shiny t-zone as the day wears on. I wear Porcelain and would say the shade sits mid-way between Opal and Pearl in the Luminizing formula. I love the matte-yet-dewy finish this gives (sounds ludicrous but I don’t know how else to describe it) – it’s semi-matte without any retro chalkiness, making it lovely for evenings, or during the winter months when we all need a little extra help to put our best face forward.
Because this is slightly closer to foundation in terms of coverage, it’s important to get the right shade but again, if you stick to the option prescribed for your colouring, it’s difficult to go too far wrong.
Porcelain – fair complexions
Linen – light complexions
Nude – light to medium complexions
Chamomile – medium to tan complexions
Hazel – tan complexions
Hopefully this will help! And remember, the Luminizing Moisture Tint is also sold in a set of 4 x 5ml minis (all the same shade) – which are perfect for stashing in your make up bag and are also less of a financial outlay if you’re undecided as to which shade will best suit.
