The Bling Ring - 2013 - Starring Emma Watson, Claire Julien, Katie Chang and Israel Broussard. A big misfire for Coppola, this true story about a group of morally vacuous kids who rob celebrity homes has no heart and features a group of characters that are so unlikable that never gain any interest in the events that unfold. Rating: 4 out of 10
This Is The End - 2013 - Starring Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Jay Baruchel. Directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. By far the funniest movie of 2013. A hilarious send up of everything celebrity which features superb writing with spot on performances and great use of music. This summer's pleasant surprise. Rating: 8 out of 10
White House Down - 2013 - Starring Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum. Directed by Roland Emmerich. A completely implausible thriller which I enjoyed much of. Takes too long to get going but once it does it is action packed. Rating: 7 out of 10
The Call - 2013 - Starring Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin. Directed by Brad Anderson. A surprisingly effective thriller with a likeable lead performance by Berry which unfortunately loses its way in the final act with a murky plot and unsatisfying ending. Rating: 6 out of 10
World War Z - 2013 - Starring Brad Pitt. Directed by Marc Forster. The best summer movie of 2013 so far. While it strays from the Max Brooks book (which I read and loved) it is a smart and well made suspenseful film that toys with zombie conventions and delivers first rate thrills with a great final act. Rating: 8 out of 10
The Internship - 2013 - Starring Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn and Rose Byrne. Directed by Shawn Levy. Mildly amusing comedy about two best friends who look for one last chance to make something of themselves by taking a internship at Google. Wilson and Vaughn play their usual roles, eternally optimistic, but the routine is wearing thin. Rating: 5 out of 10
After Earth - 2013 - Starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Nowhere near as bad as critics would have you believe, this new film starring the Smith family is an entertaining, minimalist sci-fi flick with the major distraction being Will Smith's monotone, robotic performance. Rating: 7 out of 10
Now You See Me - 2013 - Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson and Morgan Freeman. Directed by Louis Leterrier. The closer you look the less you see, actually that is not true. The closer you look here the more plot holes you find. An inconsistent film that tries to be too smart and wears too thin with its overly long run time. Rating: 5 out of 10
The Hangover Pt 3 - 2013 - Starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Ken Jeong and Zach Galifianakis. Directed by Todd Phillips. While I was not a fan of the first two installments I didn't mind this one as bad. It is mean spirited at times but I enjoyed Ken Jeong and found his character this time around immensely funny. Rating 6 out of 10
Snitch - 2013 - Starring The Rock and Jon Bernthal. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh. A Welcome departure for The Rock as he does his best job yet of shedding his WWE persona. He stars in this gritty film about a father who goes undercover with the DEA to try to get his son out of jail. Rating: 7 out of 10
Star Trek Into Darkness - 2013 - Starring Chris Pine, Zach Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Benedict Cumberbatch. Directed by J.J. Abrams. I've never been a fan of the old Star Trek but I am of the new reboot by Abrams. This is what summer entertainment is all about. Fun from start to finish with a scene stealing turn by Cumberbatch. Rating: 8 out of 10
The Last Stand - 2013 - Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Luis Guzman, Peter Stormare and Johnny Knoxville. Directed by Kim Jee-Woon. Not like Arnold's action flicks of the 80's, this is a ultra-violent film that is surprisingly more entertaining than I would of thought. Rating: 6 out of 10
Gangster Squad - 2013 - Starring Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone. Directed by Ruben Fleischer. A true life movie about legendary gangster Mickey Cohen that fizzles almost from the get go. Entirely too stylish with a plot that resembles the infinitely more superior The Untouchables. Rating: 3 out of 10
Broken City - 2013 - Starring Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta Jones and Mark Wahlberg. Directed by Allen Hughes. A tedious and meandering political tale about greed and corruption in the mayor's office. While Crowe and Wahlberg try their best there is no spark here, no characters or situations to become interested in. Rating: 4 out of 10
The Iceman - 2013 - Starring Michael Shannon, Winona Ryder and Ray Liotta. Directed by Ariel Vromen. A by the numbers true story about mob enforcer Richard Kuklinski (Michael Shannon) who over more than a decade killed some 100 men for the mob. The film doesn't have the impact it should but Shannon is mesmerizing and makes it worth watching. Rating: 6 out of 10
Pain and Gain - 2013 - Starring Mark Wahlberg, The Rock and Anthony Mackie. Directed by Michael Bay. I am not usually an admirer of Bay's films but I actually rather enjoyed this darkly comic and cynical film about 3 body builders who attempt to steal the American Dream. Rating: 7 out of 10
This Must Be The Place - 2011 - Starring Sean Penn, Frances McDormand and Judd Hirsch. Directed by Paolo Sorrentino. A lethargic film that moves at a snails pace about a former rock star who hunts down a Nazi war criminal that alluded his father. Sean Penn delivers a monotone performance that keeps the viewer disengaged. Rating: 3 out of 10
All Good Things - 2010 - Starring Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella. Directed by Andrew Jarecki. A meandering true story about a rich kid who may have a mean streak. Film is so oft-putting that we never develop any feelings for the characters and consequently are never engaged to any of the outcomes. Rating: 3 out of 10
Crossing Over - 2009 - Starring Harrison Ford, Ray Liotta, Alice Eve and Cliff Curtis. Directed by Wayne Kramer. An ambitious film that fails to deliver on most of the hard hitting questions it asks. Centers on immigration problem in LA and becomes mired in too much politics and not enough characterizations. Rating: 4 out of 10
Bachelorette - 2012 - Starring Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan and Rebel Wilson. Directed by Leslye Headland. An awkward and mean spirited comedy featuring 3 of the most unlikable characters I've had the displeasure of seeing on film in quite some time. Rating: 2 out of 10
Adventureland - 2009 - Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart and Ryan Reynolds. Directed by Greg Mottola. Any movie that has me feeling sympathetic to and rooting for Kristen can't be that bad. Rating: 6 out of 10
The Switch - 2010 - Starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman. Directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck. When will Hollywood studios stop letting Aniston be in these Rom-Com's?! Enough already. Rating: 3 out of 10
Hick - 2011 - Starring Chloe Moretz, Eddie Redmayne, Blake Lively. Directed by Derick Martini. Hick is one of the worst movies I have seen lately. This should never have been made.
Rating: 0 out of 10
Hitchcock - 2012 - Starring Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren. Directed by Sacha Gervasi. Hitchcock was a film that never quite jelled to me. Anthony Hopkins did an impersonation more than a performance but Helen Mirren was especially strong. Rating: 5 out of 10
